How Can I Stop Burnout Before it Happens?
If you’re anything like me, you may have found yourself feeling burned out time after time again. I imagine you may have made countless attempts to stop burnout before it happens. There may have been moments when your attempts were successful. But then days, weeks, or even months pass by and you may be right back to feel burnt out again. You may even be feeling burnout in the midst of reading this.
Enough is enough! You deserve to live a life free from feeling burned out.
Fortunately, for both you and I, I have…
worked with hundreds of clients over the years
received a formal education in the field of psychology
learned many skills, practices, and strategies that you may be able to use along your journey to overcome burnout once and for all
By attending weekly therapy sessions, mental health professionals such as myself could provide you with the therapeutic support that you may use to prevent, as well as overcome, burnout.
Going to Burnout Therapy Could Lead to You…
Becoming less susceptible to experiencing burnout ever again
Feeling more confident in your ability to stop burnout before it happens
Identifying triggers causing you to feel burnt out
Noticing the internal as well as the external precursors to experiencing burnout
Granting yourself grace when you find yourself in another perpetuating cycle of burnout
Engaging in coping skills as well as self-care practices to cope with the symptoms of burnout
Along with going to therapy, stopping burnout before it happens, as well as overcoming burnout once and for all, may both be accomplished by reevaluating your priorities. This could lead to you experiencing a greater sense of “work-life balance”.
Some adults who may get so good at prioritizing their work, the needs of others, and their day-to-day responsibilities while failing to prioritize rest, relaxation, and self-care. On the other hand, there are some adults who may try to fit EVERYTHING into their schedule. This includes socializing, fun, rest, self-care, hobbies, work, family, friends, alone time, chores, errands, and so much more.
Then they may eventually get to the point where it all begins to feel like they’ve got way too much on their plates. Both types of adults could potentially benefit from taking the time out to reevaluate what their priorities are. Both types of adults may have to figure out what shifts they could make regarding their priorities. That is if their goal is to overcome burned out or to stop burnout before it happens.
Ways You May Stop Burnout
Prioritize Self-Care
Adults who prioritize work over self-care may benefit from shifting their priorities. They could do this by focusing more on breaks, leisure, and slowing down. This shift in focus may look like scheduling a lunch break instead of working nonstop. This may also look like making room for random breaks throughout the day to get out of the house or office. If you can relate to this adult I speak of, you may also benefit from not taking any work home or not working past “office hours”.
You could also give yourself enough time to rest, reconnect with family/friends, or do something fulfilling. To accomplish this, you may have to set some healthy boundaries with your workplace, boss, manager, or supervisor. Just remember, you deserve to be able to set healthy boundaries for your mental well-being. And you definitely deserve to set healthy boundaries if it leads to you feeling less burned out.
Now let’s not forget about the adults who may be burned out because they strive to show up for everything and everyone. This adult may think that they can do it all (and you know what, maybe they can). But after doing all that they set out to do, they may find that doing it all leads to them feeling burned out. This adult I speak of may benefit from the following…
Delegate Tasks
such as having someone else do the chores and run errands on your behalf
Reevaluate How You’re Spending Your Time
Dedicate specific days/times towards engaging in work, hobbies, or self-care activities
this may look like…
only working five days a week instead of six
going out with friends two nights a week instead of four
this way you may have more time for family, hobbies, and other forms of self-care
continuing to watch your favorite tv show before bed BUT limiting that time to an hour instead of three
this way you may get a good night’s rest
Once again, it may be so beneficial for you, someone who may have experienced…
stress
exhaustion
irritability
frustration
anger
anxiety
fatigue
