ONLINE THERAPY FOR ADULTS IN FLORIDA FEELING…
OVERWHELMED
as a result of experiencing…
Anxiety & Stress
About Me
Hi, my name is Darryon C. Spencer!
I’m a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) providing online/virtual therapy to adults in Florida who are feeling anxious, stressed out, and overwhelmed to the point where it’s getting in the way of them living a happy life.
My goal is to provide you with empathetic support as well as teach you practical coping skills you could use to overcome…
depression
trauma
and/or issues you may face as a black man or woman.
I’ll be right there with you throughout this entire process to listen, validate, and encourage you as we explore some solutions to your problems.
My Personal Experience
I empathize with you on such a deep level because I too have personally experienced anxiety, trauma, irritability, grief, depression, stress, and burnout. On top of that, I have been a high achieving, perfectionistic, people pleasing adult (which probably contributed to everything I was experiencing).
I can vividly remember the pressure I would put on myself to achieve “greatness”, and the burnout I would experience after placing such ridiculously high expectations on myself. I remember feeling like I was never doing enough or good enough, especially after I compared myself to others.
Even though my family, friends, and colleagues all admired me, I still felt like an imposter, as if I wasn’t the person they saw me to be. I remember feeling alone, like I was the only one out there in this world dealing with these issues. That was until I started to go to therapy.
Going to therapy was one of the best decisions I ever made. My therapist validated my experience and helped me understand what I was experiencing and why. Equipped with knowledge, coping skills, and a new outlook on life, I was able to address as well as resolve my feelings surrounding anxiety, trauma, grief, depression, stress, and burnout. My goal is to do for you what my therapist did for me.
Why do I feel the way I do?!
Along your journey, you may come to find out that…
the emotions you’re experiencing may have to do with some past trauma(s) that’ve yet to be explored.
maybe you feel unsettled because you never had the opportunity to fully process your grief.
and although you could be dealing with anxiety, you may also be experiencing depression as well.
Whatever the case may be, you deserve to experience peace of mind and I am here to help you as you work towards achieving that.
In therapy, we could work together on…
learning skills and problem solving strategies you may use to cope with and/or overcome worry, fear, nervousness, and anxiety
getting to a place where you may experience a sense of peace due to no longer feeling as irritable or stressed which could result from consistently applying stress management strategies
becoming mindful of what could have contributed to you feeling so overwhelmed and work towards never feeling burned out ever again
still showing up for others while setting healthy boundaries to honor your wants, needs, and mental well-being.
exploring some scientifically backed strategies for insomnia which could lead to you getting a full and satisfactory night’s sleep
My Approach
Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT):
You may have heard of CBT. In case you haven’t, CBT stands for cognitive behavioral therapy. Cognitive is just a fancy way of saying “pertaining to your thoughts”. So in CBT, therapy is focused on looking into how your thoughts influence your feelings and your feelings influence your behaviors. Once we’ve identified the impact your thoughts have on your feelings and behaviors, we then work towards learning ways you could either shift your way of thinking, if it is in fact causing you to feel unpleasant emotions, and/or manage your unpleasant feelings by using various coping skills.
Exposure Response Prevention (ERP):
Simply put, ERP is a type of therapy where, under the therapist’s guidance, the clients gradually and repetitiously exposes themselves to things that they fear or things that cause them distress all while abstaining from engaging in distractions or compulsive behaviors. There’s much more to it than that, but much of the therapy is focused on engaging in exposure exercises with the belief that thoughtfully and systematically exposing you to things that make you feel distressed could lead to a reduction in OCD, social anxiety, and/or general anxiety related symptoms.
Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT):
You may have heard of EMDR but that isn’t the only type of therapy you could use to address trauma. In CPT, therapy focuses on exploring, identifying, and challenging the beliefs a client has formed as a result of their traumatic experience(s). The goal is to challenge the beliefs, which could be significantly impacting how you behave. And since your beliefs and behaviors may be the thing(s) keeping you from experiencing the life you want to live, challenging beliefs, in the specific way that CPT does, could lead to a reduction in triggering trauma symptoms and could also lead to an increase in overall life satisfaction.
Written Exposure Therapy (WET):
It doesn’t stop there; CPT and EMDR aren’t the only types of therapy used to address trauma. WET has also been shown to be effective for some people experiencing trauma symptoms. The things that set WET apart from other trauma therapies is that it is approximately five sessions in length, a good majority of the session is spent writing [rather than talking], and there usually isn’t any homework to be completed in-between sessions. The way WET usually works is that you write about the vividly descriptive details of your traumatic event repetitively over five sessions. But that’s not all, some time is spent writing about how you feel the trauma event has impacted you and changed your life. And besides from writing, time will be spent educating you on how WET works, how you’ll be asked to approach it, all while receiving feedback from your therapist and them checking in with you to see how things have went or how they’re going.
