A Tip to Manage Burnout
Most people feel anxious because of everything on their to-do lists. You wake up, go to work, run a bunch of errands before coming home, try your best to engage in some form of self-care, and before you know it, it’s time to go to bed. As you get ready for bed, all you can think about is how you still haven’t completed everything on your to-do list. So you end up going to bed feeling behind and overwhelmed. Then you wake up feeling the same way you did last night. This leads to anxiety, and eventually, burnout too.
If it feels like you have a million and one things to do, then I empathize with you.
Feeling this way can lead to stress, exhaustion, anxiety, and the many other feelings that accompany burnout. Wouldn’t having three things on your to-do list be nice versus 99? If your answer to that question is “Yes”, then see what you can do to either delegate, postpone, or remove certain tasks from this list of yours. I acknowledge that there are many things we HAVE to do. Let’s also take the time to acknowledge that there are many things we CHOOSE to do as well.
And while we’re acknowledging what we have to do in comparison to what we choose to do, let’s take a moment to acknowledge one more thing. Yes, there are certain things that simply have to get done. But guess what?! We don’t have to be the one who gets it done. We can assign someone else the task and have them get it done for us. That’s how delegating works. And although you may prefer to handle it all on your own, life might get a whole lot easier if you received some support. On the other hand, if you are fully welcoming of support and feel as though there is no one you can turn to, please know that there are mental health therapists out there, such as myself, a black male therapist providing…
I would be more than honored to support you mentally while also taking the time to help you figure out how you can receive support in other areas of your life.
So, in summary, maybe if we…
choose to do less, we would feel less overwhelmed.
make cutbacks on where we’re investing our time, energy, money, and other resources, we’d be able to make more time for rest, relaxation, and breaks.
say no to others more often we’d have the opportunity to say yes to ourselves more frequently
delegate tasks instead of doing everything ourselves we would only have a handful of things on our to-do list versus having a million and one things to complete.
Here Are Some Ideas for Delegating Tasks
Assign your children some chores
Hire a lawn care service
Use a delivery service for groceries
Use a cleaning service to help keep the house tidy
Sign up for prepackaged, already prepped meals to be delivered to you weekly
Have self care practictioners come to you
This includes barbers, hairstylists, the masseuse, the trainer, doctors (by meeting with them virtually), etc.
Hire a personal assistant for help with work or personal duties such as
Replying to emails
Scheduling the family’s doctor appointments
Running errands
