There are many ways to cope with burnout. But I doubt that’s what you truly want to do. You don’t want to just cope with the fact that you’re feeling overwhelmed all the time. What you want to do is overcome burnout once and for all.  What you want to do is never ever experience what it’s like to feel this amount of exhaustion, stress, and anxiety ever again. So let’s do just that. Let’s work towards you overcoming burnout for good.

Such a goal may seem unattainable but believe me, it’s possible. Many of my clients and I can attest to that. So, do you want to hear how we overcame burnout and how you can too? I’m sure the little voice inside your head is saying, “Yes, of course, I want to know how to never feel burned out ever again! I wouldn’t be reading this blog post if I had no interest in knowing”. Okay, if you say so. Here are some tips on relieving burnout symptoms.

Slow Down if Your Feeling Burnout

There are many ways you can approach overcoming burnout. This blog post will mainly be focused on just one of those ways. For some, it’s the most important, most profound, and most effective. Based on my work as a licensed mental health counselor in Florida, this is the coping skill that I’ve seen the majority of my clients take a liking to. It all has to do with increasing our level of awareness. Many say that we cannot solve a problem or make changes in our lives without first being aware. So let’s start off by being aware of the pace at which we’re moving on a day-to-day basis.

Overcoming Burnout in Therapy

In therapy, we throw the word mindfulness around quite often when speaking about awareness. There are so many things to be mindful of, especially when we are experiencing burnout. This blog post will be focused on being mindful of one thing and one thing only: the pace at which you’re moving. And once you’re aware of that, intentionally decide to move at a slower, more easygoing pace.

To think that moving slower will cure burnout seems quite insulting to some. Telling someone who’s burned out to ‘slow down’ can also seem quite invalidating. That’s why what we’re doing here is simply being aware of our pace and noticing if we would benefit from moving slower.

To not overcomplicate or oversimplify this concept, I encourage you to try moving just 10% slower than you usually would. See how that feels. This doesn’t just mean literally walking 10% slower. this means doing everything 10% slower. At least while you’re trying this out.

Try Moving 10% Slower when you’re…

  • Talking

  • Walking

  • Eating

  • Breathing

  • Exercising

  • Working

  • Taking a shower

  • Getting dressed

  • Brushing your teeth

  • Etc.

Then be mindful of what starts to happen once you start moving 10% slower. Many people say they feel more at peace. Some people mention that they feel more aware of what they’re thinking, feeling, or doing. Most people say, in their own words, how much moving at a slower pace improved their mental health.

To be fair, and fully transparent, there are those who feel extremely uncomfortable moving at a slower pace. And guess what? Their feelings are valid. For them, moving slower is a huge shift. Moving at a frantic pace might have helped them keep up with all they had to do. But they will admit that it came at a cost. That cost was them feeling burned out. They don’t deserve to feel burned out and neither do you.

Maybe you feel like moving at a slower pace just isn’t for you. Maybe you feel like you need to do way more than that to overcome burnout. If that’s the case, be sure to reach out to a mental health professional, such as me, for additional support. You deserve it.
