How to Manage Grief & Burnout: Tips From a Grief Counselor in Broward County, FL
I’ve learned quite a few things about grief over the years. As a black male therapist in Florida who provides online grief therapy to adults, I’ve learned that we don’t just experience grief when we lose a loved one.
We Experience Grief As a Result Of…
Going through a breakup or divorce
Losing a close friend
(due to you two growing apart)
Losing your job
Losing your health
(as a result of being diagnosed with a life-altering medical or mental health condition)
Losing yourself as you take on a new role
whether that be a new role as a…
parent
working professional
caretaker to a family member
or simply transitioning into adulthood and feeling as though you left behind pieces of yourself in your childhood
How We Grieve to Process Loss
I’ve also learned that everyone grieves differently. That’s because everyone processes loss in different ways.
Different Ways We Grieve
Some people…
cry
and some even smile (trying to reassure themselves and others that everything’s just fine)
yell, shout, or scream
and some become more passive and soft-spoken
isolate themselves
and some constantly surround themselves with others in an effort to do away with the feeling of loneliness
get so overwhelmed by grief that they can barely get out of bed, let alone do productive work.
On the contrary, some adults who’ve experienced some form of loss and are now grieving either take on more work than they can handle or continue to work at the same pace they did prior to experiencing loss.
It’s Common To Experience Burnout While You Struggle With Grief
It’s actually quite common for adults to get lost in their work after experiencing loss. Doing so allows them to focus their thoughts on something other than who/what they’ve lost. But for many, this is simply a recipe for mental, emotional, and/or physical burnout.
By placing their time, energy, and thoughts on other things besides their loss, some adults feel like they’ll be able to suppress the immense amount of emotional pain that lay deep down inside of them. Pain, hurt, and heartache that is just waiting to be triggered by something, someone, someplace, or some reminder.
Unfortunately, it’s sometimes only a matter of time before they experience this triggering event. Then the emotions will begin to rise to the surface. Sometimes the grieving adult just becomes sad, irritable, lonely, or distracted. Sometimes, the emotions are so overwhelming that the grieving adult has an emotional meltdown or breakdown. This can look like them crying, weeping, yelling, shouting. Then signs and symptoms of burnout typically follow like feeling…
Overwhelmed
Irritable
Stressed
Exhausted
Anxious
Angry
Frustrated
How To Manage Your Grief and Burnout Symptoms
So, instead of taking on the same amount of work, or even more work, what you might really benefit from is to either…
take a break from work
or receive more assistance/support at work.
If you feel like you would benefit from a break, then give yourself permission to take one. You deserve it!
If you feel as though you could benefit from receiving some more support or assistance while at work, then ask for some. You deserve that too!
