You’ll probably notice that you move at a much faster pace when you’re feeling anxious or burned out. Which makes so much sense! You’re probably trying to pick up the pace due to feeling under pressure.

You’re probably feeling Anxious and Under Pressure due to…

  • having way too many tasks to accomplish at work

    • with quickly approaching deadlines

  • feeling like you don’t have enough time or energy to do it all

  • receiving little to no support from others

  • people expecting a lot from you

    • or maybe you expecting a lot from yourself

  • an overwhelming amount of things to take care of in your personal life like…

    • Chores

      • doing laundry

      • washing dishes

      • cooking and meal prepping

      • cleaning

    • Errands:

      • grocery shopping

      • going to the gym

      • taking the kids to practice

      • scheduling, attending and accompanying your loved ones to doctor appointments

    • Supporting others such as your…

      • children

      • parents

      • friends

      • family

      • coworkers

      • or other people you don’t even have a close relationship with

        • this leads me to wonder, who’s showing up for you?

Whatever the case may be, I empathize with you.

Now here’s one thing I’ve learned. When most people have a lot to do, they find themselves picking up the pace and beginning to rush. But rushing doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be able to get it all done. Rushing doesn’t mean you’ll accomplish much more than you would if you paced yourself. Rushing also doesn’t guarantee that you will get things done quicker. The only thing that’s guaranteed from constantly rushing is you feeling…

  • exhausted

  • stressed

  • irritable

  • frustrated

  • anxious

  • burned out

Practice Moving at a Slower Pace

Now, moving at a slower, more easygoing pace, doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll fall behind schedule. Moving at a slower, more easygoing pace doesn’t mean you won’t accomplish all you need to get done either. You’ll be surprised to find out that you may end up getting more done by refusing to rush. Which may not make sense to you until you actually practice moving at a slower pace.

Once you change your pace, you’ll notice some shifts beginning to happen for you. These shifts that take place will be both mental and physical. Mentally, you will start to experience your overwhelming thoughts transition from racing to coming and going at a much slower pace. Physically, you’ll start to experience a greater sense of peace. The kind of peace that feels comforting, tranquil, and serene. The kind of peace that leads to…

  • a decrease in muscle tension

  • a reduced heart rate

  • deeper/fuller breathes

  • you becoming more attuned to the world around you

  • being more aware of what you see, smell, taste, hear, and feel

If you don’t experience some of this happening naturally, now that you’re moving slower, you can purposefully take that extra time to notice the details of everything previously mentioned.

Try Practicing Mindfulness

Again, if it doesn’t occur naturally, make space to practice mindfulness by…

  • feeling and listening to your heartbeat

  • doing a mental scan of your body to see if there’s any tension in a certain area

  • paying attention to the way you’re breathing

    • Ask yourself…

      • “Am I taking full breathes or is my breathing more shallow?”

      • “Am I breathing slowly or fast?”

      • “Am I even remembering to breathe or am I finding that I’m holding my breath?”
